MOVIE REVIEW: Chhichhore
Chhichhore
Starring: Sushant Singh Rajput,
Shraddha Kapoor, Varun Sharma
Director: Nitesh Tiwari
Music Director: Pritam
This film will trigger a flood of memories for anyone who has lived on campus, or even attended college. It is peopled by characters that you will instantly relate to. And since the director and co-writer Nitesh Tiwari is an IIT Bombay graduate himself, the dialogues have an authentic, conversational feel about them, replete with innuendos! Most importantly, the film sends out the message that losing is as critical a life lesson as winning.
As Raghav (Mohammad Samad) battles for life after a suicide attempt, his distraught parents—Annirudh (Sushant Singh Rajput) and Maya (Shraddha Kapoor)—reunite with their friends after decades, who then narrate their college experiences to Raghav, hoping these memories will help save the boy who has lost all will to live. There is no doubt that in its flashback mode, Chhichhore soars.
On the flip side, none of the characters age convincingly. The make-up is tacky, especially Shraddha Kapoor’s, who is restrained but hardly convincing, in her older avatar. Sushant Singh Rajput shines in some scenes. But it is actually the supporting cast of the film who carry this film, with a flimsy plot, on their able shoulders. Varun Sharma, who gets the best lines, is especially terrific as Sexa.
The Chhichhore philosophy—savor the journey and don’t worry about getting anywhere—will appeal to many in the audience. So go on this nostalgia trip!
