MOVIE REVIEW: Afwaah (Rumor)
Afwaah (Rumor)
Starring: Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Bhumi Pednekar, Sumeet Vyas
Director: Sudhir Mishra
Music Director: Karel Antonin
The plot of Afwaah, which mostly pans out over one night, revolves around a vicious rumor that causes havoc in the lives of the lead characters. While the movie is relevant in these times of social media and fake narratives, nuance in storytelling has often been sacrificed at the altar of social commentary, which takes away from the overall impact. What’s more, the climax seemed a tad convenient.
An advertising professional, Rahab Ahmed (Nawazuddin Siddiqui), finds himself in a dangerous situation that spirals out of control—all because he saves a politician’s daughter, Nivi Singh (Bhumi Pednekar), from a bunch of goons sent by her power-hungry politician fiancé (Sumeet Vyas). Rahab and Nivedita become fugitives together.
The talented Nawazuddin Siddiqui is always good, but his character was better etched in Serious Men directed by Sudhir Mishra. Bhumi Pednekar, as the bold and cocky runaway girl, hits all the right notes. But the scene stealer here is Sumeet Vyas who, without taking recourse to stock mannerisms, plays the bad guy with aplomb. The camerawork and background score lend the movie a distinctive sound and texture.
So, watch this political thriller as it is a poignant reminder that everything you see and hear isn’t always the truth.
