MOVIE REVIEW: 12th Fail
Mission Raniganj: The Great Bharat Rescue
Starring: Vikrant Massey, Medha Shankar,Priyanshu Chatterjee
Director: Vidhu Vinod Chopra
Music Director: Shantanu Moitra
Absolutely awe-inspiring. If one didn’t know that this movie was based on the true story of a boy from a humble and rural background who cracked the coveted and hard-tocrack Indian Civil Services exam, it would be easy to think of the story as a figment of the writer’s imagination.
Adapted from a book of the same name, 12th Fail makes you blink in disbelief. Just how did a guy from a tiny hamlet in the infamous, once-infested-by-dacoits area of Madhya Pradesh manage to pull off the seemingly impossible? The winner here is the outstanding performance of Vikrant Massey playing the protagonist Manoj Kumar Sharma. Simply put, the talented actor lives his role of a struggling Hindi-medium student who makes the journey from a Chambal village to the top echelons of the police force through sheer grit.
The supporting cast is no less competent and relatable— Medha Shankar as Manoj’s supportive girlfriend, Anantvijay Joshi as his helpful friend, and Priyanshu Chatterjee (seen after a long time) as the upright cop who becomes Manoj’s idol—and they all contribute to making this movie an entertaining and, more important, a relevant and meaningful cinematic experience.
So do watch this absorbing underdog saga whose key word is Restart!
