Mission Raniganj: The Great Bharat Rescue

The first half of this rescue thriller is anything but thrilling, In fact, the shoddy production values, jerky editing, loud background score (unnecessary because the story is inherently dramatic), and inane conversations leave you wondering why you chose to watch this film. But just when you have thrown up your hands in despair, comes the second half which keeps you engrossed and on the edge of your seat.
Based on a true event from 1989, the movie pays tribute to the intrepid mining engineer, the late Jaswant Singh Gill (Akshay Kumar, sincere as always), who put his life in jeopardy to save the lives of 65 miners trapped in the flooded Mahabir Colliery in West Bengal’s Raniganj area. Gill was able to achieve this feat by devising an unconventional and untested rescue method, and in the face of many odds like corrupt officers and petty office politics. Awe-inspiring, indeed!
Ravi Kishan as Bhola and Jameel Khan as Pasu stand out among the actors playing the terrified miners. As Gill’s loving and supportive wife, Parineeti Chopra does justice to her extended cameo. The incredibly talented Kumud Mishra seems wasted in his role of the Mahabir Colliery Chief, but can the actor ever be bad? He breathes life even in his small part.
And yes, besides Akshay, there’s another hero in the movie. This one will surely steal your heart!
