Drona had everything going for it—a great vision, great star cast and great special effects. Unfortunately, all these things pale before a shoddy script and screenplay. Or did Goldie Behl think that all this would camouflage and make up for a wafer-thin plot? Anyway, the end result is that this much hyped fantasy/adventure film leaves you cold and unmoved.
Drona is about an ordinary youth, Aditya (Abhishek Bachchan), who, after donning a magical bracelet, metamorphoses into a superhero, Drona, and stops the evil sorcerer Riz Raizada (Kay Kay Menon), a descendant of the Asuras, from sipping amrit. It is Sonia (Priyanka Chopra) who makes Drona realize his true identity. The film boasts of some fantastic action montages, especially the train sequence, which reminds you of Sholay, and the one in which Kay Kay turns Drona’s mother (Jaya Bachchan) into a statue. You truly laud the director for them.
Abhishek Bachchan as Drona tries hard to breathe life into his character but all his efforts seem to be in vain in the face of an insipid storyline. The kohl-rimmed Priyanka as Abhishek’s bodyguard looks svelte in her sexy and innovative costumes but that’s about it. She could have emerged as a feisty woman with a well-rounded character (alas, she wasn’t given that much importance). Jaya Bachchan is a picture of grace and dignity but hardly gets much footage. Lastly, the talented Kay Kay Menon is less of a villain and more of a buffoon here. He goes totally over the top.
Drona’s canvas is huge, the special effects spectacular. A pity that it’s also a huge letdown!
