Tennis Tournament Witnesses Keen Contest
Pujari, a non-profit Bengali organization, held a tennis tournament at East Roswell Park, on Nov. 12 and 19. There were 14 teams divided into four groups.
In the round robins on the first day, the two top teams from each group played the quarter finals. The semifinals and final were held on Nov. 19.
The doubles semifinal saw Lakshman Rao and Niraj Sharma go head-to-head against Ramji Beera and Dipak Nambier. The game turned out to be among the most competitive in the tournament as it extended into the third set. Beera and Nambier lost the final set, going down 6-4 to Rao and Sharma, who ultimately won the final against Ugandhara Rao Madugala and Siva Arza.
Dr. Gouranga Banik, president of Pujari, gave cash prizes and trophies to the finalists. Sponsored by Homestart Financials and Mortgage, the proceeds from the tournament went to the Atlanta-based nonprofit organization, Raksha.
Members of the organizing committee, Amitesh Mukherjee, Sudipto Ghose, Pabitra Bhattacharya and Mrinal Chakraborty, along with volunteers, ensured that the event was more than a tennis contest. According to the organizers, it was a "family day out in the park."
