Rasika-A Musical Extravaganza
Melody and music contributed to a noble cause on September 7, 2002. Asha-Athens and Friends of India, two Athens ? based nonprofit volunteer organizations related to India, co-hosted a concert by Rasika, a well-known Indian music group. Residents of Athens and nearby communities were treated to a memorable evening of Indian Film Music.
Rasika, a vibrant team of extremely talented music artists and instrumentalists, kept the nearly sold-out audience enthralled throughout the show. The artists performed brilliantly before a very receptive crowd that was literally up on its feet at every song. Among the evergreen songs performed were Badan Pe Sitaare Lapete Hue, Paanch Rupaiya Baara Aana, and Aaja Aaja Main Hoon Pyaar Tera. The group also performed several of today?s hits such as Dola Re Dola, Koi Kahe Kehta Rahe, and You Are My Sonia.
Asha-Athens is the Athens chapter of Asha for Education, a volunteer organization dedicated to bringing about socio-economic changes in India by supporting the basic education of underprivileged children in India.
Asha for Education has been organizing music concerts as part of its fund-raising efforts throughout its forty-five chapters in the US and ten chapters across the world. Asha-Athens, now in its third year of existence, has worked toward the development of three worthy educational projects in rural Uttaranchal, Bihar, West Bengal. With proceeds from the Rasika concert, they hope to extend their noble work to additional deserving projects. Asha?s involvement in such projects is not restricted to being just a funding agency. The group is also a catalyst in the development of projects and has led them to a stage of self-reliance, minimizing the projects? dependency on the outside world.
?Friends of India? is an organization committed to spreading awareness about India across a diversity of fronts. Prior to the Rasika concert, Friends of India organized three events, each of which was performed before a sell-out crowd. All three concerts exclusively included Indian classical music. By organizing the Rasika concert, whose focus was on Indian film music, Friends of India has expanded its bounds and helped to spread an awareness of a different genre of Indian music.
