The Association of Physicians of Pakistani Descent of North America (APPNA) held a health fair with bone marrow registry on Sunday, September 16, 2012. With motto “APPNA Cares” (Community Awareness and Response with Excellence in Healthcare Services), about 40 physicians and health care workers and 67 volunteers were on hand in the Ashiana restaurant banquet hall from 10 am-2 pm to offer testing and answer questions and concerns.
Volunteers wear tee-shirts emblazoned with APPNA CARES at the AAPNA health fair.
All 407 patients underwent triage with blood pressure, BMI (body mass index), and blood glucose testing. Other tests given were cholesterol panels (100), EKGs (125+), vision/glaucoma screenings (200+), and screenings for anemia, stroke, and obstructive sleep apnea. Free flu vaccines were given (100, with more requested). Education and counseling for diabetes and weight loss were a prime focus, along with consultation services with specialty physicians; fun activities and learning opportunities were provided at the kid’s corner. A bone marrow registry was a valuable component of the health fair.
A donation of $1000 was made to a food bank, the Lilburn Food Coop, and the event was covered on local TV news.
