Music institute’s Riwayat concert

Riwayat, a soulful musical concert organized by Aarohi Institute of Music (AIM) founded by Preeti Uttam more than ten years ago, was held in Atlanta on March 26h, 2023, at the Red Clay Music Foundry. The concert was titled Riwayat, an Arabic word that means tradition, as the effort was to help the audience connect with their cultural and historical roots.

AIM was founded more than ten years ago by Preeti Uttam, a Bollywood playback singer and the daughter of the famous music director, Uttam Singh. She was one of the child singers in the very popular “Lakdi Ki Kathi, Kathi Pe Ghoda” (from the movie Masoom, 1983) song. She went to sing several Hindi songs including the critically acclaimed “Charkha Chalati Maa” (from the movie Pinjar, 2003).

It was a treat to listen to Uttam’s talented students, several of whom she has been grooming for the last eight-ten years. The concert began with a mesmerizing rendition of Raag Jog followed by Raag Yaman. The audience got to witness Hindustani semi-classical music, Raag-based Bollywood melodies, thumris, ghazals, and even Sufi music. The highlight of the evening was a brilliant performance by Uttam herself that left the audience delighted. She was accompanied by the finest group of local musicians including Sai Ravisankar, Amol Khanapurkar, Gurinder S. Negi, Wilgens Pierre, Ashwin Seshadri, Tanweer Mian, Abir Thakurta, Dipak Gundani, and Souryadeep Bhattacharyya. Sadaf Farooqui, the emcee, did a great job of keeping the audience entertained by sharing stories about Uttam’s musical journey. The concert was a testament to the rich cultural heritage of India and the timeless beauty of its classical music traditions.
