Keralan Dance to be Performed at the Hindu Temple
Kerala is the home of two Indian classical dance forms ? Mohiniyattam and Kathakali. Dr. Kalamandalam Radhika, who is an exponent of both forms, is scheduled to perform Mohiniyattam at the Hindu Temple in Atlanta (September 6th at 4 PM). Dr. Radhika has set up a charitable trust, Nrithya Dhara, which means "regular income" when loosely translated. Dr. Radhika, who has done her doctorate in Mohiniyattam, has pursued art as her life's mission. This trust, which is in its third year, was set up to help artists who are struggling financially. The money generated through her performances and workshops benefits aged artists who are indigent. Dr. Radhika ensures a monthly payment of Rs. 500 to these artists ? who tend to be dancers, singers, and instrumentalists ? for the rest of their lives. All the proceeds from this program will fund the trust.
