Janamshtami at ISKCON Temple
On August 23, 2019, hundreds of devotees gathered at one of the oldest temples in Atlanta, the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) temple (founded in 1970) to celebrate Janmashtami all day long.
The joyous celebration of Lord Krishna’s birth started at 4:30 am and ended with midnight aarti. Prasad was served all day. In the evening flute and guitar were played, while several took turns swaying the cradle of Baby Krishna back and forth. Several devotees made use of their time waiting for aarti by chanting mahamantra silently with their malas:
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna
Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama
Rama Rama Hare Hare
Outside the temple was a huge tent with a stage, where children participated in fancy dress competition and drama and chants. On the stage, abhisheka of Krishna and Radha was done. It was conducted by HH Bhakti Charu Swami Maharaj and HG Srutakirti Das.
HG Vedasara Prabhu, president of ISKCON Atlanta temple, welcomed the chief guest of the evening State Representative Roger Bruce (D - Atlanta. District 61). He expressed his appreciation of large gathering that had joined in celebration. He was felicitated with a garland. Some of the key members of the temple and Pratap Singh Chouhan were thanked for their support, and Seema Garg for publicizing the event.
While abhishek was going on, the children received trophies for their participation. The ambiance was that of a festival where everyone participated, either witnessing it, singing, or serving, all celebrating the life and teachings of Lord Krishna.
