Dr. G.V. Raghu, past President of the Hindu Temple of Atlanta and President of Chinmaya Mission Atlanta gave the welcome speech, commending parents for introducing scriptures to their children at a very young age.
Participants were required to chant a specific number of verses starting randomly based on a cue card they picked. Six volunteer judges had been selected to grade them on (a) proper intonation and pronunciation of the verses, (b) memorization, and (c) presentation and overall effect. The rendering was of a high quality, showing the commitment and effort of the participants, parents and teachers.
Because of the large number of participants, the competition was conducted in two parallel sessions, with 3 judges for each session: 2 judges for criteria (a) and (b) and one judge for (c).
To encourage each participant, all were awarded a trophy and a certificate. First, Second and Third place winners were awarded special trophies. The environment was serene, and it was heartwarming when youngsters from Pre-School, Pre-K and First Grade chanted Gita without flaws and with touching effects.
Mr. Chittaranjan Jyotishi, one of the judges, complimented all for their interest and commitment. He urged leaders of all temples and communities to develop competitions to encourage youths to take part in chanting our holy scripture Gita, which is a guide for humanity.
