Mahindra & Mahindra is the leading automobile and farm equipment manufacturer in India. It is also the third largest tractor manufacturer in the world, only behind John Deere and New Holland. At a dinner meeting on August 27th, held at Bombay Grill in Duluth, about 40 GIACC members, the evening's sponsors and their guests discussed Mahindra & Mahindra's expansion in Georgia. In 2002, Mahindra USA opened a second tractor assembly and distribution center in Calhoun, which is 68 miles north of Atlanta. This facility will more than double production capacity to meet the growing demand for tractors. Mr. Ravindra Shahane, the Plant Manager, shared his experiences in setting up the plant and also mentioned why Calhoun was chosen. The main reason for Mahindra's entry into this country is because the eastern U.S. is the world's largest tractor market. And Calhoun is convenient because of its proximity to the major transport routes that serve Mahindra's customer base.
Mr. Shahane also spoke to the audience on the history and progress made by Mahindra & Mahindra of India since 1945. They started their US operations with sales of $10 million in 1998, and that has grown ten fold to about $100 million this year. They have a loyal dealer base in 28 states. Following his talk, there was a video program that outlined the various divisions of Mahindra and their successes. During a brief Q & A session, Mr. Shahane responded to questions about Mahindra's supply chain and their local content.
