Ghazak ke Shyam
An informal ghazal evening on April 30th, hosted by Swarnaad School of Indian Music at a Duluth clubhouse was an understatement to the talent present in the ensemble. The few who attended were treated to an authentic program by passionate aficionados.
Locally renowned ghazal exponent Hamidji started out with one of his favorite, 'Aaj Zaane Ki Jid Na Karo'. He followed it up with haunting selections from Mehdi Hasan, Ghulam Ali, Talat Mahmood, Mohammed Rafi and Mukesh.
Among the musicians, there was Sanin Rahman on rhythm guitar, Rafi on Rabab producing haunting tunes which reminded us all of the depth of music from that part of the world. Sanjay Patel on Tabla was in a mood for some complex rhythms. The soft spoken Jose Thomas let his guitar do the talking.
Those interested in ghazals and oldies are encouraged to get in touch with Swarnaad music school for jam sessions and informal fun. www.swarnaad.com
