Ekal has been involved in eradicating illiteracy since 1986. It operates over 34,000 single-teacher informal schools across India in tribal and rural communities. The Ekal movement has helped curb social evils such as alcohol consumption, superstitions and inter-tribal rivalry, and empowered villages to become self-reliant through knowledge.
The evening’s participants included Nritya Natya Kala Academy students under the baton of Sandeep Savla, local artists from musical group Sham-e-Sargam, and some visiting artists from South Carolina. A raffle added to the fun, and new sponsors and donors were recognized by the emcee. During dinner, a film about Ekal’s activites was screened. The evening of dance, song, and comedy generated cash donations and sponsor pledges for over 35 schools.
