Dr. Beheruz N. Sethna Amongst 100 Most Influential Georgians
CARROLLTON, GA, Arguably Georgia's most prestigious list, The 100 Most Influential Georgians, now includes the name of the president of the State University of West Georgia, Dr. Beheruz N. Sethna.
Georgia Trend magazine compiles the list of power players in the State. According to Managing Editor Kenna Simmons in the January issue, 'We've read the tea leaves, consulted the political oracles and listened to the whispers to bring you our bets on who's going to be exerting influence in 2003 in business, government and civic affairs.'
Sethna, who has been at UWG's helm since 1994, joins the likes of Governor Sonny Perdue, Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank, University System of Georgia Chancellor Thomas Meredith, United States Senator and former Governor of Georgia Zell Miller, United States Congressman John Lewis, and AOL Time Warner Vice Chairman Ted Turner as just a few of the power brokers who made 'the list.'
On October 20, 2002, Sethna and the University of West Georgia were listed by the Times-Georgian newspaper as being first among the list of Movers, Shakers, and Newsmakers in Carroll County, in recognition of the many contributions that they have made to the economy of the region. The report said, 'Our selections are (un)ranked, with one exception. We did determine to choose who and what we believe to have the most influence on our community. Number one on our list is the State University of West Georgia and its president, Dr. Beheruz Sethna.'
The 2003 List of The 100 Most Influential Georgians is an additional honor for Sethna, who has stated in the past, as he does today, 'I am humbled by these honors, and accept them only on behalf of my many wonderful faculty and staff colleagues, students, and external supporters.'
Sethna is President and CEO of the State University of West Georgia, and Professor of Business Administration. He is the first person from any ethnic minority to become President of a predominantly white or racially-integrated University or College in Georgia. Also, he is the first person of Indian origin ever to become President of a University anywhere in the United States.
A graduate of IIT-Bombay, IIM-Ahmedabad, and Columbia University, Sethna has post-doctoral qualifications from Indiana University (Bloomington), and Harvard University. In 2000, he was named Distinguished Alumnus of the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay.
He has been married for more than 28 years to Madhavi Sethna, who has three Masters degrees, national and university teaching awards, and is on the faculty and a program lead at Southern Polytechnic State University. They have two children: Anita, who is a Georgia Tech graduate in Biology, and a Dean's Scholar at Emory Medical School; and Shaun, who is a Georgia Tech graduate in Industrial Engineering and is at Columbia Law School.
