Chinmaya Niketan family celebrates Republic Day
Chinmaya Niketan’s Bal Vihar session on January 26 began as usual with chanting Om—but then, something different! 7th grade teacher Vijay ji addressed the students and all who were present about Republic Day: reflecting on the strength in standing united; the freedom struggle before independence; the annual Delhi parade; and his recounting of Jalianwala Baug gave the listeners goosebumps.
Then someone spoke about the Census in March and why all Indians in the U.S. should be involved, vote, and have their voices heard. Comedian Rajiv Satyal’s “I am Indian” video was funny, insightful, and conveyed to all present, young and old, what India and Indians have contributed to the world—and to have pride and stand up for your roots and for being Indian.
A poem written by Swami Tejomayananda was sung, followed by the Indian national anthem and an enthusiastic “Jai Hind!” The meeting ended with birthday celebrations and aarti.
One mother said that the day helped her children “see the love we all share for India. They may understand better why their mother can never get through the national anthem with dry eyes.”
