Bhagirath Majmudar Receives Evangeline Papageorge Teaching Award
Bhagirath Majmudar, MD, professor of pathology and associate professor of gynecology/obstetrics at Emory University School of Medicine, has received the Evangeline Papageorge Distinguished Teaching Award for 2005. The award, which was established in 1993 by the Emory Medical Alumni Association to recognize excellence in medical education, is one of the most prestigious awards presented by the School of Medicine or Emory University.
The Papageorge Award honors the legacy of medical alumna Dr. Evangeline Papageorge, beloved teacher and administrator, who served Emory for many decades. The award and honorarium are given to a medical faculty member "whose intellectual luminosity has generated the greatest excitement about learning among students and colleagues."
A member of the Emory School of Medicine faculty for 34 years, Dr. Majmudar is board certified by the College of American Pathologists and has served as chairman of the Pathology Section of the Southern Medical Association.
Dr. Majmudar has been recognized numerous times by medical students and residents for excellence in teaching. His awards include the Dean's Teaching Award, the pathology residents Golden Apple Award for Teaching, the Best Basic Science Faculty Award, and the Best Lecturer Award. He has published 70 research papers on gynecology and pathology and has been on the editorial board of the Journal of Reproductive Medicine since 1994. He is a scholar of Sanskrit, and has been a spiritual leader and priest for the Indian community for the past 25 years. He was a member of the Interfaith Committee for the Olympic Games and for the state of Georgia. He is a poet, playwright and actor.
