Bengalis usher in Boisakhi
The Atlanta Bengali Forum ushered in Boisakhi , which marks the start of the new solar calendar year for Bengalis, with their Boisakhi festival on May 2 at Meadowcreek High School in Norcross.
This year, the event drew not only Bengalis within metro Atlanta but a diverse crowd across cultures, allowing everyone an opportunity to experience the rich Bengali cultural heritage. The cultural program was marked by recitations of poems and composed by Rabindranath Tagore and Kazi Nazrul Islam, and also dance performances. Children’s performances showcasing poems by Sukumar Ray and Rabindra sangeet drew a huge response from the appreciative audience.
The highlight of the evening was the staging of the play Dampati, written by playwright Manoj Mitra. The evening ended with a sumptuous dinner. For information on the forum’s upcoming events, including a cricket match and the annual picnic, visit www.atlantabengaliforum.org.
