INDIAN TEACHER WINS GLOBAL AWARD

Ranjitsinh Disale, a primary school teacher in Maharashtra, India, recently won the Global Teacher Prize 2020. The prize, sponsored by the Varkey Foundation in partnership with UNESCO, comes with a cash award of US $1 million.

In his winning speech, the 32-year-old teacher made an extraordinary gesture, pledging to share half the prize money with his fellow Top 10 finalists. As a result, the other nine finalists will receive just over US$55,000 each. This is the first time in the Global Teacher Prize’s six-year history that the overall winner has shared the prize money with other finalists.

“If I share the prize money with the rest of the (finalist)  teachers, they will get a chance to continue their work . . . and we can reach out and lighten the lives of as many students as we can,” Disale said.
