Two years ago, Wipro’s billionaire founder
Azim Premji became the first Indian to sign the
Giving Pledge, joining Bill Gates’ and Warren Buffett’s
initiative to get the world’s richest people to
give most of their wealth to charity. Premji, who
has a net worth of $16.5 billion, recently moved
closer to keeping the pledge, giving an additional
18 percent of his stake in Wipro to his charitable
trust and bringing
the total allocated to
charity to 39 percent
(about Rs. 53,000 crore).
According to the Harun India Philanthropy List,
Premji has been the “Most Generous Indian” for
the last two years.
