Music Director: Ram Sampath
After creating awareness on conditions like dyslexia (Taare Zameen Par) and Down Syndrome (Sitaare Zameen Par), Aamir Khan has now, through his latest offering, drawn attention to the medical condition of Transient Global Amnesia. It’s not surprising then that Ek Din, officially adapted from the Thai 2016 hit One Day and shot mostly in Japan, has shades of Sadma and the recent blockbuster Saiyaara. But that’s where the similarity ends. Unlike these movies, Ek Din does not leave an emotional impact.
Transient Global Amnesia or TGA becomes the focal point in this old school slow paced romantic drama, which allows the shy, self-effacing Dinesh or Dino (Junaid Khan) to spend one magical day in the company of Meera, his perky office colleague whom he secretly loves (Sai Pallavi in her Hindi film debut). The irony is that once Meera gets her memory back, she will remember everything except that one day spent with Dino.
Junaid Khan manages to pull off his socially awkward nerdy guy and the talented Sai Pallavi plays the Japanophile Meera with charming abandon. But together they are unable to conjure up anything close to a spark on screen, that vital ingredient for a love story to resonate with the audience. Debutante Sunil Pandey’s lackluster direction doesn’t help. You can skip Ek Din if you have a yen for compelling and intense romances. But if you find understated romances compelling, you might like Ek Din with its soft and gentle cinematic texture. You can also watch it for its visual appeal—shot extensively in Japan, the frames are picture perfect!
