Adapted from the 2018 Thai horror thriller The Pool, Tu Yaa Main is a love story with a reptilian twist! A twist that will keep you on the edge of your seat post-interval. In fact, the latter half of this survival drama, with its nail-biting moments and jump scares, is a complete movie in itself. A thought: Did this thriller even need a first half with its uneven storytelling and pacing?
The story follows a social media influencer Avani Shah (Shanaya Kapoor) and rapper Maruti Kadam (Adarsh Gourav) who fall in love despite their totally contrasting backgrounds. En route to Goa, things take a horrifying turn when they end up in a deep, empty swimming pool with a man-eating crocodile for company! The White Tiger threw up a very talented actor, Adarsh Gourav, five years ago. Here, too, he nails it as the gritty, ambitious rapper, his distinct Mumbai flavor lending authenticity to the character he plays. The surprise package here is the chic looking Shanaya Kapoor, actor Sanjay Kapoor’s daughter, who with her assured and poised screen presence ably conveys the privilege her character requires without flamboyance. She handles the emotional scenes well too.
Together, the lead pair with their natural onscreen chemistry and convincing performances ensure that your eyes remain fixed on the screen, despite a few hiccups and loopholes in the script. The music-driven, layered soundscape enhances the atmospherics.
Occasionally messy, it’s a largely gripping ride. On Netflix.
