Vadh 2 (Twenty-One)
Starring: Neena Gupta, Sanjay Mishra, Kumud Mishra
Director: JaspalSinghSandhu
Music Directors: Rochak Kohli
A spiritual sequel to the critically acclaimed 2022 crime thriller Vadh, Vadh 2 sees the lead actors Sanjay Mishra and Neena Gupta return with the same onscreen names, Shambhunath Mishra and Manju, but in entirely different roles. The setting this time is a prison, where Shambhunath works as a guard and Manju is an inmate serving a life term for a murder she insists she did not commit. An unlikely bond develops between the two, leading to the emotional core of this slowburn thriller, which shares just one thing with the original Vadh: a similar moral universe.
Senior cop Ateet Singh’s (Amitt K. Singh) investigation into the mysterious disappearance of a politically connected violent inmate, Keshav (Akshay Dogra), and the entry of a bigoted jail superintendent, Inspector Prakash Singh (Kumud Mishra), into the picture is the turning point in this prison drama, which keeps you glued to the screen right till the well–concealed final twist, despite some hiccups on the way.
Strong performances hold the film together, even when the screenplay and pacing flag. While Sanjay Mishra brings his trademark weary and whimsical style to Shambhu, Neena Gupta imparts grit and grace to Manju. Kumud Mishra and Amitt K. Singh do a fine job of walking the thin line between heroes and antiheroes. Debutant Akshay Dogra as Keshav makes for a compelling antagonist. Yogita Bihani is effective as the young new inmate, Naina. Do watch this not-so-perfect but thoughtful film.
