Indian Consulate Organizes Community Association Forum

The Consulate General of India in Atlanta hosted the Annual Indian Community Association Forum 2026 on March 8, bringing together leaders, professionals, and members of the Indian diaspora to explore ways to enhance collaboration and community engagement. The event was well emceed by Shilpa Uppuluri. In his remarks, Consul General Ramesh Babu Lakshmanan presented an overview of the Consulate’s functions, highlighting key consular services and various Government of India initiatives designed to support the diaspora. He shared that, in addition to visas, the office also provides networking and collaboration opportunities, showcases Indian culture and innovation, celebrates growing civic participation and leadership, addresses diaspora needs and strengthens connections, and builds global partnerships.

The Consul General encouraged community organizations to collaborate by sharing information with their members and patrons, especially regarding the OCI application process. To address recurring issues and provide clearer guidance to applicants, the Consulate has prepared a set of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) covering the different types of OCI applications and the procedures associated with each category. These FAQs aim to help applicants understand the correct service category, basic requirements, and the overall application process so that applications can be submitted correctly the first time. In case of any anomaly, discrepancy, or if individuals continue to have queries after reviewing the FAQs, they may write directly to the Consulate (oci.atlanta@mea.gov.in) for clarification. A short video clip on India’s tourism was shown. Distinguished speakers shared insights on leadership and civic participation.

Veteran community leader Subhash Razdan emphasized stronger networking and a “minimum common program” for collective impact. He suggested two key initiatives: (1) appoint a liaison officer/PR person in each organization to facilitate communication and resource-sharing among groups. (2) encourage Indian-Americans to identify as U.S. citizens and balance cultural connections with integration into American society.

Rajeev Menon, community leader, discussed civic engagement at the county level and emphasized the importance of collective participation and unity in strength. He suggested visiting local city websites to find areas of interest such as art, history, and festivals, and to volunteer with organizations as a way to learn, contribute, and get involved with the community. He also encouraged attendees to get to know their congressman.
