Good Sports: SACHIN’S CRICKET MISSION
Will cricket ever be popular in America? Before you shake your head, just remember how far soccer has come in the last 25 years. It’s unlikely that cricket will reach the same level of popularity within the next quarter-century, but the sport could gain a significant following in cities where immigrants from cricket-playing nations abound.
Sachin Tendulkar is doing his part to spark interest in the sport. He and Shane Warne have organized three friendly all-star T20 games in the U.S. this month. Tendulkar’s Blasters will face Warne’s Warriors in New York City, Houston and Los Angeles. The cricketers will also participate in a number of promotional events, including community clinics for youngsters.
Tendulkar is optimistic about cricket’s growth potential in America. “The day should come when we see an American kid picking up a cricket bat with a baseball bat, or a cricket kit along with football shoes,” he told India-West.
