Good Sports: RAISING AWARENESS ABOUT AUTISM
Sharwani Kota and her friends love to dance and they’re doing it for a good cause: raising awareness about autism. The 15 high school students are members of Hope4Spandana, a New Jersey-based nonprofit organization that helps children with autism.
Sharwani, 15, started the organization to help autistic children at a school in India, as well as autism organizations in the United States. To raise awareness, members of Hope4Spandana have been organizing flash mobs, surprising people in malls and other public places with a 20-minute dance routine that includes both Bollywood and American pop songs. After their performance, they display a banner, hand out brochures and business cards, and collect donations.
“Flash mobs are the ideal way to spread awareness,” Sharwani told the Sentinel newspaper.
