Indian Doctors – They're in Dodge City, Too!
Imagine that you’re sitting on a plane and introduce yourself to the stranger in the next seat. He asks where you’re from and you say “India.”
“Really?” he says. “My doctor is from India! My wife’s doctor is also from India! And my children’s doctor is also from India!”
“No kidding!” you say, but it doesn’t surprise you. Doctors from India can be found in almost every American hospital. A hospital without an Indian doctor is more noteworthy.
That’s perhaps what Surgeon General nominee Dr. Vivek Murthy was thinking during a Senate confirmation hearing when Kansas Senator Pat Roberts told him that he’d feel right at home in Dodge City, Kansas.
“I’m going to invite you, because we have a lovely doctor from India,” Roberts said. “She’s in her mid- 30s, and she’s highly respected by the community. And another doctor from India who did my carpal tunnel when I did a stupid thing. And so, I think you’d be right at home, and we would welcome you.”
