Good Sports: TRIPLE DELIGHT AT WIMBLEDON
Wimbledon was a double delight for Martina Hingis and a triple delight for India. The Swiss player, who won five Grand Slam singles titles in the ’90s, teamed up with Sania Mirza to win the women’s doubles title and with Leander Paes to win the mixed doubles title.
It was Mirza’s first Wimbledon doubles title and fourth Grand Slam doubles title, while Paes captured his fifth Wimbledon doubles title and 16th Grand Slam doubles title. At age 42, he once again extended the record he first set two years ago: oldest man to win a Grand Slam title.
A third doubles title bodes well for India’s future in men’s doubles. Seventeen-year-old Sumit Nagal and his Vietnamese partner Nam Hoang Ly won the boys doubles title. Don’t be surprised if Sumit wins a Grand Slam men’s doubles title in the near future. His partner, of course, would be the age-defying Leander Paes.
