Good Sports: NO CHANGE FOR CHAND
Indian sprinter Dutee Chand doesn’t want to change her body to comply with rules she considers patently unfair. The 18-year-old has a condition called hyperandrogenism, which causes her body to produce levels of testosterone considered too high for female athletes, according to a 2011 rule by the International Association of Athletics Federations.
Chand, a 100-meter national champion in her age group, has been barred from competing against women until she either takes hormone-suppressing drugs or has surgery to keep her body from producing so much testosterone. Chand is appealing the ban through the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Switzerland.
“I feel that it’s wrong to have to change your body for sport participation,” she recently told the New York Times, speaking in Hindi through an interpreter. “I’m not changing for anyone.”
