Good Sports: DEDICATED TO SKATE
Serena Mahendru, a ninth grader in Granada Hills, California, wakes up at 4 a.m. on school days to ice-skate before her classes begin. Despite carrying a full academic course load, she squeezes in more practice after school.
“Skating is really enjoyable and I feel so accomplished when I practice,” she said in a press release from her school, Granada Hills Charter High School.
Her dedication paid off at the Ice Skating Institute’s Holiday Challenge, a national competition held recently in San Jose, California. Mahendru won six awards, including first place in two team categories and second place in a category for individuals and couples.
The 14-year-old has been skating since age 6 when her mother, Sabina Sikand, signed her up for lessons to prepare her for a skiing trip.
“She is so motivated,” Sikand said. “It’s all her.”
