MOVIE REVIEW
2 States
Starring: Arjun Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Amrita Singh
Director: Abhishek Varman
Music Directors: Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy
The basic premise of 2 States (based on Chetan Bhagat’s autobiographical bestseller of the same name)—cross-cultural love and marriage—is as old as the hills but the treatment of the hackneyed theme, embellished with good performances, humor, and lovely music, keeps you engaged, its overstretched second half notwithstanding.
Krish Malhotra (Arjun Kapoor) is a Punjabi from Delhi and Ananya Swaminathan (Alia Bhatt) is a Tamilian from Chennai. They meet on the IIM Ahmedabad campus and quickly fall madly in love. So far, so good. In fact, these scenes are nice and frothy. It’s only when the two decide to get married that the problems begin—for the couple, as also for us. Both sets of parents are against the match but the lovebirds are determined to get their nod and blessings. So things get a bit repetitive and tedious sometimes, and you just wish they would get on with it.
No doubt there are some charming and funny moments in the movie but they don’t add up to a great movie. The lead pair is extremely likeable, especially the spirited Alia who is a natural and is the best thing in the film, though she is hardly in her comfort zone depicting a South Indian. Both mothers present interesting contrasts—Amrita Singh is terrific as Krish’s loud, obnoxious mother while Revathy as Ananya’s mother is more subtle and restrained. Ronit Roy as the hero’s abusive, alcoholic father (still in his Udaan mode) is superb: some of the best scenes in the movie are the father-son ones.
