A disarming film with a heroine whose innate naivete, quirkiness, as well as fearlessness, makes you fall in love with her, Queen is as much a triumph for the director as it is for its lead actress.
Middle-class west Delhi girl Rani (Kangana Ranaut) is shattered when her fiancé, the London-returned Vijay (Rajkumar Rao), calls off the wedding at the last minute. But then she decides to go on a pre-booked European honeymoon on her own, to escape wallowing in self-pity. In a world far removed from her own, Rani makes mistakes as frequently as she makes unlikely friends, and in the process gradually regains her confidence.
The film belongs to Kangana—she is simply fabulous, embracing her role with a nuanced understanding—but acting by the supporting cast is no less consummate. As Rani’s bohemian Parisian pal, Lisa Haydon is terrific, striking the right combination of genuine affection and sultriness. Rajkumar Rao, as always, slips into his part with ease, playing the egotistical jerk with a fine restraint.
What’s more, Amit Trivedi’s music is a joy to hear (but the songs are too many in the first hour) and the conversations are refreshingly real. In fact, the sparkling humor comes from the dialogues that Kangana herself is credited with co-writing. Some scenes, however, seem contrived but they certainly don’t take away from the overall impact this movie makes.
So do watch this extraordinary journey of self-discovery. You’ll find yourself smiling throughout. This Queen rules!
