Dhoom 3 is Aamir Khan’s show all the way, though it is really not his kind of film. In fact, you sometimes wonder if Mr. Perfectionist is simply too serious for a racy, high-octane action movie of this kind. He even does the tap dance with a furrowed brow! But of course, as always, it’s a sincere performance, albeit totally lacking the cool quotient which it should have had.
Shot mostly in Chicago, this third instalment of the Dhoom franchise boasts of superb cinematography and thrilling stunts, but that’s about it. There’s nothing really that sets it apart from other movies or for that matter, the earlier two Dhooms, except that this one is more plot-heavy and melodramatic. And yes, it moves into novel territory: circus and magic, with a big plot twist before the interval. But even that’s a rip-off from Christopher Nolan’s The Prestige.
Abhishek Bachchan as the surly cop Jai Dixit and Uday Chopra as his skirt-chasing sidekick Ali Akbar are back to liven up the proceedings. To give Uday his due, he’s pretty good at providing humor. Katrina Kaif as Alia, the circus performer and acrobat, does what is expected of her, which is to look stunning, sensuous, and graceful. But the motorcycles are given more screen time!
Watch Dhoom 3 but don’t have too many expectations, and please, don’t look for logic anywhere. Otherwise, you will find this movie nothing more than plain trash mounted on a spectacular scale!
