MOVIE REVIEW
Bhaag Milkha Bhaag
Starring: Farhan Akhtar, Sonam Kapoor, Pawan
Malhotra, Divya Dutta
Director: Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra
Music Directors: Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy
Bhaag Milkha Bhaag is Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s passionate but flawed ode to one of India’s greatest sporting legends, Milkha Singh. Flawed, because instead of relying solely on the drama inherent in Milkha’s inspiring struggle against all odds, the director fills up his cinematic tribute with extraneous commercial movie trappings—too many songs, overlong romantic tracks and a needlessly loud background score to highlight momentous moments. Also, the movie is tiresomely long. But certainly, it is an earnest attempt to tell an engaging story about an icon.
Farhan Akhtar as the Flying Sikh puts his best foot forward and his gritty, real, and sincere performance is the film’s biggest strength. He gets great support from Prakash Raj (as a no-nonsense military man), Pawan Malhotra (the army coach who groomed Milkha), Yograj Singh (as the national athletics coach) and Divya Dutta (as Milkha’s doting elder sister), not to forget Jabtej Singh as little Milkha. However, Dilip Tahil’s theatrical performance as Jawaharlal Nehru is unintentionally comical! Sonam Kapoor has little to do except look sweet.
Music by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy will leave you charged with national pride, and cinematography by Binod Pradhan is outstanding. The flashbacks are picturized and woven into the screenplay beautifully.
So do watch Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. But you need not sprint to the nearest theater. A jog would do!
