MOVIE REVIEW
Dum Laga Ke Haisha
Starring: Ayushmann Khurrana, Bhumi Pednekar
Director: Sharat Katariya
Music Director: Anu Malik
This is a charming little film, very unlike a Yashraj production. Revolving around a relationship between a guy and his plump wife, the movie is shorn of all starry trappings and yet succeeds in sucking you into its world because it is real, very real. It also sends out a very important message: You can’t force anyone to love someone.
Set in small town India, Haridwar to be precise, Dum Laga... tells the story of Prem Prakash Tiwari or Lappu (Ayushmann Khurrana), a 10th class failed 25-year-old who is married off, much against his wishes, to an educated and intelligent but overweight girl, Sandhya (Bhumi Pednekar) who aspires to become a teacher. Lappu just cannot bring himself to have any feelings for his new bride.
Sandhya, refreshingly, is unapologetic about her weight and is mostly confident in her own skin. The relationship between the unlikely couple, and how that eventually changes, is at the heart of the film.
Ayushmann and debutante Bhumi both deliver heartfelt performances, but it is Bhumi who steals the show with an assured act, never once reducing Sandhya to a self-pitying caricature. There are a host of fine supporting actors, too, including Vijay Mishra, Seema Pahwa, and Sheeba Chaddha, who add authenticity to the very believable scenarios.
So do watch this movie which evokes nostalgia for a time gone by…the mid-’90, when Kumar Sanu ruled the music scene.
