MOVIE REVIEW: Sui Dhaaga: Made in India
Sui Dhaaga: Made in India
Starring: Varun Dhawan, Anushka Sharma,
Raghubir Yadav
Director: Sharat Katariya
Music Directors: Anu Malik, Andrea Guerra
Notwithstanding its slight implausibilities towards the end, Sui Dhaaga is nonetheless worth a watch for its authentic setting, convincing performances, and fine moments that are seamlessly woven into the narrative.
Egged on by his wife Mamta (Anushka Sharma), the happy-go-lucky Mauji (Varun Dhawan) quits his demeaning job and starts his own tailoring business. This is the beginning of a long and arduous journey for the couple as they struggle to establish themselves. While the first half is a winner with scenes that are straight out of life and packed with gentle humor, post-interval the fabric of the film loses some of its luster.
While Varun is earnest and likeable as always, Anushka is admirably effortless, and lends a quiet dignity to her role of the deceptively steely wife who dares her husband to dream. Especially endearing is the love that blossoms between them in the most desperate of circumstances. Among the supporting cast, Raghubir Yadav is spot on as the cynical father, but it is Yamini Dass, playing Varun’s mother, who is the scene stealer here. She is simply outstanding.
So you can go ahead and watch this feel-good movie that sends out an inspiring message about entrepreneurship and dignity of labor. What’s more, it does this without getting preachy.
