Sujoy Ghosh is back after a hiatus with his favorite actress, with another whodunit. But Kahaani 2 is not a sequel to Kahaani, rather a stand-alone second installment in the franchise.
Single working parent Vidya Sinha (Vidya Balan) meets with an accident and slips into a coma while searching frantically for her daughter Mini, who has been kidnapped. But there is a twist in the tale. Sub-inspector Inderjeet Singh (Arjun Rampal) is shocked to find a resemblance between Vidya and a school clerk from Kalimpong, Durga Rani Singh, who is wanted for kidnapping and murder. What is the truth....?
The first half, with its authentic feel, is taut and gripping. If you were charmed by Kolkata in Kahaani, then you will love Kalimpong here. Post-interval, somehow the film loses its grip, the pace slackens, and it becomes too predictable, which is the worst thing you can say for a thriller.
Shorn of makeup and glamour, Vidya is the driving force of Kahaani 2. She is in fine form as both Vidya and Durga Rani Singh. Arjun Rampal, as the cop trying to crack the puzzle, is a revelation. Jugal Hansraj, in a small but pivotal role, makes a comeback of sorts.
A piece of advice: Do not compare Kahaani 2 with the nailbiting Kahaani. Treat it as a stand-alone film. That is the only way to keep disappointment at bay.
