Jolly LLB 2 is not a perfect but it is a perfectly enjoyable film, with the right mix of humor, action, emotion, and hard hitting realism involving issues like corruption, terrorism, and the state of our judiciary. However, this courtroom drama becomes a little long-winded, quite like the trials in our courts! Small-time but street-smart lawyer Jagdishwar Mishra aka Jolly (Akshay Kumar) dupes a young, pregnant widow Hina (Sayani Gupta) as he is desperate for cash to buy his dream chamber. The repercussions of this act are so grave that it awakens Jolly’s conscience, driving him to fight Hina’s case, his first big case, all by himself. To make matters worse, he finds himself pitted against the ruthless Pramod Mathur (Annu Kapoor), Lucknow’s most dreaded defense lawyer.
Annu Kapoor is excellent (though occasionally he plays to the gallery), but it is Saurabh Shukla, playing Justice Sundar Lal Tripathi, who is the scene stealer here. In fact, he is so good that the film can be watched for him alone! It’s interesting to see the amiable Kumud Mishra playing a negative character for a change. And Akshay Kumar? Well, the superstar, at times deliberately restrained, sincerely sheds the trappings of stardom, slipping quite easily into the rustic avatar of Jolly. He makes a great husband, too, who cooks for his wife and fixes her pegs!
To sum up, remove the melodrama and the preachy lessons towards the end, and you have a jolly good entertainer.
