MOVIE REVIEW: Baar Baar Dekho
Baar Baar Dekho

Kaif, Sarika
Producer: Karan Johar
Director: Nitya Mehra
When the trappings and fluff stay with you longer than the characters and their emotions, especially in a love story, you know it has not been a great cinematic experience. Touted as a high concept love story where love is explored through the prism of time travel, Baar Baar Dekho is alas, banal in its execution and you wish you hadn’t seen it even once! But to be fair, the opening sequence was well done and held out great promise...
Maths genius, Jai Varma (Sidharth Malhotra) gets cold feet before his marriage to his childhood sweetheart, Diya Kapoor (Katrina Kaif). After a fight between them one night, Jay wakes up every following morning at a different point of time in his future. His relationship with Diya is in a mess, so he must figure out how to go back and fix things. This constant going back and forth in time, which is fun pre-interval, becomes repetitive and boring later.
The biggest problem with Baar Baar Dekho is that no interesting or original insights are offered by way of life lessons. Who doesn’t know that relationships are more precious than careers or that the present is all that matters?
The lead pair is good looking, no doubt, but the passion is missing, despite both trying their best to give their romance some spark. And hey, despite having expressive eyes, why is Sidharth so bland? He was so good in Kapoor & Sons! It’s good to see strong actors like Sarika, Ram Kapoor, and Rajit Kapur, but the script lets them down.
By the way, this ‘unique’ concept has been seen before in films like About Time and The Time Traveler’s Wife.
